Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions we hear most about our electrical, compliance, and smart home services.

Electrical Services

Consumer Unit Replacement

How long does a consumer unit replacement take?

Most replacements are completed within a single day. Your power will be off for part of the work, and we'll keep you informed throughout.

Do I need a consumer unit replacement?

If your property has a fuse box with rewirable fuses, no RCD protection, or has been flagged during an EICR, a replacement is strongly recommended.

Will I get a certificate?

Yes. Every consumer unit replacement includes a full Electrical Installation Certificate, and the work is notified to building control.

Fault Finding

How much does fault finding cost?

We charge for diagnostic time rather than a fixed fee, as faults vary in complexity. We'll give you a clear idea of likely costs before we start.

Can you fix the fault once you find it?

In most cases, yes. We carry common parts and can resolve most domestic faults in the same visit.

Is a burning smell an emergency?

Yes. If you smell burning from an electrical outlet or switch, turn off the circuit at the consumer unit and call us immediately.

Lighting Installation

Can you help me choose the right lights?

Yes. We can advise on light types, colour temperatures, positioning, and control options to suit your space and preferences.

Do you install outdoor lighting?

Yes. We install garden lighting, security lights, and outdoor feature lighting, all properly rated for exterior use.

Can lighting be integrated with smart home systems?

Absolutely. We can install smart switches, dimmers, and lighting systems that work with platforms like Apple Home, Google Home, and others.

Rewires

How long does a rewire take?

A typical 3-bedroom house rewire takes around 5–7 working days, depending on access and complexity. We'll give you a clear timeline before starting.

Will I need to move out during a rewire?

Not usually. We work room by room and ensure you have power available throughout. Some disruption is inevitable, but we keep it manageable.

Do I need a full rewire or just a partial one?

We'll assess your installation and recommend the most appropriate scope. Sometimes a partial rewire or targeted upgrades are sufficient.

EICR Certificates

How often do I need an EICR?

Landlords are legally required to have an EICR every 5 years or at change of tenancy. Homeowners are recommended to have one every 10 years.

What happens if my EICR fails?

An EICR doesn't pass or fail in the traditional sense, but it may identify codes C1, C2, or FI that require remedial action. We can quote for and carry out any necessary work.

How long does an EICR take?

A typical domestic EICR takes 2–4 hours depending on the size and age of the property.

EV Charger Installation

How long does an EV charger installation take?

Most installations are completed in half a day, depending on the complexity of the cable run and any additional electrical work required.

Can I choose my own charger?

Yes. We can install a charger you've already purchased, or recommend one based on your vehicle, usage, and budget.

Do I need a dedicated circuit?

Yes. EV chargers require a dedicated circuit from your consumer unit to ensure safety and performance. We handle this as part of the installation.

Smart Home Installation

Which smart home platform do you recommend?

It depends on your existing devices and preferences. We work with Apple Home, Google Home, and platform-agnostic solutions. We'll recommend what suits you best.

Can you add smart features to an existing home?

Yes. Many smart home features can be retrofitted without major rewiring, though some benefit from network or electrical upgrades.

Will my smart home still work if the internet goes down?

We design systems with local control in mind where possible, so core functions continue to work even without an internet connection.

Ethernet Wiring

Is Cat6 sufficient for a home network?

Yes. Cat6 supports 10Gbps over shorter distances and 1Gbps over standard home runs. For most homes, Cat6 is more than sufficient for current and near-future needs.

Can you install ethernet in an existing home?

Yes. We route cables through loft spaces, under floors, and in walls to keep the installation clean and hidden.

Do you set up the network equipment too?

We focus on the cabling infrastructure. We can advise on routers, switches, and access points, and ensure everything is connected and working.

Home WiFi Systems

Is this better than a mesh WiFi system?

In most cases, yes. Consumer mesh systems use wireless backhaul which halves bandwidth at each hop. Our installations use wired backhaul and enterprise-grade access points for significantly better performance.

How many access points do I need?

It depends on the size and construction of your home. After a survey, we'll recommend the right number for full coverage without over-provisioning.

Do you supply the equipment?

We can supply and install everything, or work with equipment you've already purchased. We'll recommend brands and models that suit your needs.

CCTV Installation

Wired or wireless — which is better?

We strongly recommend wired (PoE) cameras for reliability. Battery-powered cameras can miss events, lose connection, and need constant maintenance. Wired systems just work.

Can I view cameras on my phone?

Yes. We set up remote viewing on your phone and any other devices so you can check your cameras from anywhere.

Do I need to tell neighbours about CCTV?

If your cameras capture areas beyond your property boundary, there are GDPR considerations. We can advise on camera positioning to stay compliant.

Home Cinema Wiring

Do you install the AV equipment itself?

We focus on the wiring and infrastructure. We can work alongside your AV specialist, or handle simpler setups directly.

Can you hide all the cables?

Yes. We route cables through walls, ceilings, and floors so that nothing is visible in the finished room.

What type of HDMI cable do you use?

We install high-speed HDMI cables rated for 4K and beyond. For longer runs, we use active optical HDMI or HDBaseT solutions to maintain signal quality.
